BTP petitions Mayor to back centre plans

The Business Tourism Partnership (BTP) is pushing for the Mayor of London to back plans for an international convention centre for more than 5,000 delegates in the capital. The BTP wants the initiative to be part of the Government’s tourism strategy and a member of the Greater London Assembly appointed to oversee the project. Sites considered for a convention centre include King’s Cross and Wembley. BTP chairman Michael Hirst said: "We are in talks with the developers of Battersea Power Station as its plans include meetings space but it is currently not suitable for an international centre." Other city plans include the redevelopment of areas of Excel to create conference space. Meanwhile, the London Convention Bureau (LCB) is bidding for six association meetings to pull in 60,000 delegates. This follows two recent wins for meetings in the next three years. LCB head Mady Keup said: "Association business is the bread and butter of the convention industry."
