BTP presses cities on delegate spend

The British Tourism Partnership (BTP) is to publish guidelines for the UK’s cities and resorts on how to persuade visiting delegates to extend their trip for leisure, in a bid to substantially boost tourism earnings. Research has shown the economic impact of business tourism reaches far beyond what business visitors spend on C&I programmes and that the UK could perform a lot better when it comes to maximising visitor spend. This is highlighted by research showing competitor countries’ additional spend from business visitors is estimated to be as much as 25% while in the UK it is thought to be only 15%. "Convincing conference delegates to combine business with pleasure is a win-win situation where everyone stands to gain," said BTP chairman Michael Hirst. A report will be published in April and its findings will further assist in the recovery of all sectors of UK tourism.
