Costa Del Sol invests in venues

The Costa del Sol’s meetings industry is investing heavily in its infrastructure as the region aims to regain visitor numbers following 11 September. Malaga’s new convention centre is earmarked to open towards the end of the year and will offer three conference rooms for 1,200, 800 and 400 respectively, in addition to exhibition space and a restaurant for 1,500. More than 20 luxury hotels are also scheduled to open over the next few years at an investment of €10m (£6m), and 11 properties are either enlarging or refurbishing their premises. "We are organising two fam trips, probably in September or October, one for agents and the other for corporates," said Costa del Sol convention bureau director Belén Pérez Gascon. "Recent global events did produce a slight decrease in con-tracts but we expect our market will have fully recovered by 2003." The UK market generates 70% of Costa del Sol’s C&I business.
