MANCHESTER: Starter's orders - In the run up to the Commonwealth Games, Manchester is throwing itself into a marketing drive, with dozens of new developments set to benefit. Carole Chester reports

As with the Olympics in Sydney, Manchester has high hopes that a sporting event - in this case, the 2002 Commonwealth Games - will bring in C&I business. 'Whenever a city bids for a major event, it creates heightened awareness of that city and the region around it,' says Andrew Stokes, director of destination marketing for Marketing Manchester, which promotes the city.
