Logistics in place for joint NTO buyer show

The initiative launched by 18 national tourist offices to host UK buyers at two events has gathered pace with the announcement of the chosen venues and a name for the programme.

Entitled 'The World Is Your Oyster', the 18 participating UK-based NTOs will target up to 150 invited buyers at The Gallery at Selfridges in Birmingham and the Pearl Restaurant in London's Holborn on 7 and 9 June respectively.

The event is being organised by the NTOs with assistance from London-based marketing company Mabox.

Steering committee member and Visit Denmark marketing manager Jonathan Cohen said the name was aspirational and motivational. "We are all different pearls within one oyster," he said.

Notable omissions from the event include the US, Spain and France, but Cohen claimed that there had been no deliberate attempt to keep the top three players out.

"There is more to the sector than the big three," he said. "Spain hasn't attended any of the NTO meetings and to my knowledge there is no US tourist board. Maison de la France in the UK was part of the steering committee, but its French HQ was not interested in taking part."

Cohen denied the event would conflict with current trade show attendance levels. "There is absolutely no intention that this will interfere with our existing activities at trade shows, but whether it leads to that remains to be seen."
