FIRST OFF: Recognition is the industry's reward

'And the winner is ...' ah, the thrill of awards, the triumphs and of course, the tears. Some spoilsports accuse them of being nothing more than a money-grabbing frenzy of back-slapping. Well, you could say that about the Oscars, but millions still tune in to watch them. For all their commercialism and self-congratulatory air, they serve a useful purpose in helping to judge creativity and find a benchmark for artistic excellence.
