UK buyers often look overseas when planning events, without taking the hidden costs into consideration. Yet as Mark Hillsdon reports, many would benefit by looking closer to home. When it comes to England's conference offer, diversity and quality are core themes. Whether groups are looking for the hi-tech facilities of a purpose-built convention centre, or the intimate charms of a traditional country house, England can deliver the goods. However, according to Business Tourism Partnership chairman Michael Hirst, many organisers still view England as expensive yet don't take the hidden costs of overseas travel into account. "UK buyers point out that, space for space, it can be cheaper to use venues overseas,but they don't always factor in travel costs, or the time taken to reach destinations," he says.
