‘In times of isolation we all understand the value of live events’

This is an opportunity to reinforce the importance of meetings and conferences, says the MD of Speakers Corner.

“Let’s not mess around, the current situation is an absolute disaster for the events industry,” says Nick Gold, MD of Speakers Corner.

“There is no doubt that in these unprecedented times (and for a moment of reflection, I think how many times we have said this over the last few years for all types of reasons), businesses within the events industry and indeed across all industries are focussed on survival above all else.

“The effect of isolation and the policy of working from home is becoming the accepted practice to help us through this difficult period. This is a fundamental shift in standard protocol but has already become the new normal."

Gold says that the decision for employers wanting to enable working from home, and at the same time balance office culture and employee interaction, has been taken away from companies by a situation that is out of their control.

“In the short term, the effect is devastating,” Gold continues. “Meetings, conferences and events are being cancelled, postponed and abandoned as companies and sectors are simply fighting to survive. But we are an industry that historically remains positive and looks forward.

“And this is my message of hope.

“We should see this period as an opportunity to reinforce how meetings and events create return on investment (ROI). We can help businesses start to measure the value of their event and the actual definition of success in real terms for their business as a whole.

“Our industry has an opportunity to be working more closely with our clients and be proactively creating meetings and events to generate business goals, rather than using them reactively as solutions to business ideas."

Social animals

“We crave interaction,” says Gold, “we are naturally social animals. We achieve more together by being together and this is what, at these times, we must look towards, concentrate on and remind our clients of.

“In times of potential social isolation, everyone will be wanting interaction and understanding the value of it like never before.

“Together we’ll get through this short-term pain and come out the other side in a stronger position like never before.”
