Dear C&IT: 'We all need to cut down on food waste'

Julia Charles Event Management managing director says planners need to do more to fight food waste at events.

It was concerning to read that most event organisers are worried about a lack of food, but far fewer were worried about having too much (Kitchen Nightmares - C&IT Autumn issue).

Food waste is a worldwide problem with roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption gets lost or wasted every year.*

With this shocking statistic in mind, we all need to be far more aware and not only implement good food management but have a practical plan in place to deal with post-event food waste.

I’ve recently partnered with a few food banks but giving them unpackaged conference food is not an easy process. We are working with our local food bank to help them to adapt their processes and to ensure that we follow their guidelines from the get-go.

Another good option is the Olio Food Waste app – and I urge you all to try it. Simply put in your details and a volunteer will come and collect your food waste and it gets distributed to the local community.

I hope that we can all work to reduce food waste throughout the industry – my clients have been really keen to ensure that their events don’t contribute to the problem and I’m sure your clients will thank you for being aware of this too.
