LinkedIn launches face-to-face meetings tool

Online networking platform's event-organising feature marks its first step into the physical meetings market.

LinkedIn has launched a new feature called Events, for planning, announcing and inviting people to face-to-face meetings and events. 

The Events feature will appear as a menu item on LinkedIn’s website and mobile app in English-speaking countries, with the view to expanding into non-English markets.

The tool is free to use but fairly limited in its first iteration. To find and book available spaces and create ticketing, planners currently have to include links to platforms that manage such things, such as Eventbrite. They can create an announcement and invite first-person contacts but can’t yet promote the event beyond this.

"Targeting is not the focus right now," said Ajay Datta, the head of product for LinkedIn India. "Organic adoption is what we are looking for first before we look at anything else."

A limited trial of the Events feature took place a year ago in New York and San Francisco, including meetups, training sessions, offsites, sales events and happy hours.
