A three-day summit focusing on northern innovation and discussions on the future direction of the so-called ‘northern powerhouse’ will take place this summer, NewcastleGateshead has announced.
The Northern Powerhouse Business Summit will be part of the Great Exhibition of the North. It will be the first event of its kind and will take place from 4 to 6 July 2018 in Gateshead.
The event will bring together small businesses, government ministers, mayors, and business leaders from across the north of England.
Topics for discussion include the government’s industrial strategy and how the ‘northern powerhouse’ and could be at the forefront of the strategy. Delegates will also examine challenges like AI and data-driven economy, clean growth, the future of mobility and an ageing society.
Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry said: "This summit is about making sure that the northern powerhouse is creating a northern economy fit for the future with the north at the forefront of a fourth industrial revolution."
There will also be talks on how to tackle the north-south divide in educational attainment and historic under-investment in northern transport and how to 'super-connect' the great cities and towns of the north.
Paul Szomoru, head of business events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: "The event will take place at one of our newest event spaces, Boiler Shop, which is the building where Robert and George Stephenson built the first steam locomotion - making this a perfect fit for the occasion, which is a celebration of northern innovation at its best."
"This event will bring together key people and organisations who can develop the blueprints for future growth in the north."
The Northern Powerhouse Business Summit forms a key part of the Great Exhibition of the North, from 22 June 2018 until 9 September 2018.
