The 85th International Conference on Libraries and Information (IFLA) will be held in Athens during August 2019.
The opening of a new national library building and Athens’ designation as 2018 World Book Capital was taken into consideration as part of the IFLA bid.
The Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) will host the event, with the news coming on the heels of an announcement that Athens will also host of the 2018 ICOMIA World Marinas Conference (IWMC) in October.
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said: "It is a privilege for our country to host the IFLA Congress 2019 in Athens."
Mayor of Athens, Georgios Kaminis, welcomed the decision by the Committee of the International Federation, which he said was "aligned with his strategic investment in culture as a driver for local growth".
According to the prestigious International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings, Athens has climbed several places to within the 25 most popular destinations in conference tourism.
