Christmas is a time for eating, drinking and being merry. And although in the past, the humble event planner might have been kicking back, enjoying some mince pies and attending a multitude of networking drinks throughout December, it’s now become an incredibly busy month for most.

However, today should be your final day in the office (if you haven’t finished already) and so hopefully you can start to reflect on the year that has passed, and look forward to the year that is coming.

For me, 2017 was the year I joined C&IT and I can honestly say it has been an absolute pleasure meeting so many of you. I’ve worked across a number of sectors in my career but none have been as sociable as the events industry. While this shouldn’t be a surprise, given the nature of the job, it’s just how well connected everyone is that really is unparalleled.

And when I talk about being ‘connected’ I don’t mean the conventional sense of being well-networked, although that is part of it, I am talking about the genuine relationships that have been, and continue to be, established. The industry is one giant interconnected web of friendships. Those that could be considered rivals often collaborate, the relationships with suppliers are much more than transactional and despite event planning being one of the most stressful jobs you can do, spirits are always high.

Funnily enough, this is the ethos of Christmas. The season is about being together, appreciating others and spreading joy, and yet in this industry it happens all year round. Therefore I don’t need to encourage festive cheer or implore you all to be more ‘Christmassy’, instead I will just say please keep doing what you’re doing.

Continue to live for the challenges that planning events brings, continue to remain open to collaboration in order to overcome hurdles, but most importantly, in the words of Michael Jordan, "Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game."

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
