INTERNATIONAL NEWS: MPI nets membership record

An aggressive marketing initiative by industry body Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is attracting record levels of new members.

In a departure from the traditional rules, suppliers, such as hotel chains and convention bureaus, can join MPI without an organiser match, on the proviso they recruit a new organiser member during the first year of their membership.

For the first quarter of this year, the number of new member applications increased 40%. Based on this rate of growth, the MPI projects it will sustain an all-time high of approximately 19,000 members worldwide.

UK MPI chapter president Glenda Bland said while last year saw "phenomenal

growth with membership rising from 150 to almost 260, the chapter "is focusing on retaining members through added benefits". These include a monthly educational programme, networking events and an online newsletter.
