O’Connel will take on the role of Client Services Director, heading up the new office in the city of London area which will be open by the end of the year.
Speaking about the new office and his appointment, O’Connell said: "I’ve been exclusively hired to work from London but everything will continue to be serviced from head office in Leeds. We have also hired 10 new staff over the last 12 months to support the growth of the business as a whole.
"The business has grown a lot up in Leeds, so we have been looking to see what’s next. London is the pinnacle of what and where we want to be. I know market very well having worked for Reed and Mackay so I was brought on board. First Event wants to show that it’s a major player, making a London office the natural choice. Traditionally we are better known for incentive travel, but we want to work more on the corporate side. We have an existing client base in London who we will now be able to be more engaged with.
