Business and leisure passengers will soon be able to travel non-stop in under four hours from London to Amsterdam, with the first service due to launch before the end of the year.

The focus will then be on gearing up to the busy Easter holiday period and the launch of a second service direct to Rotterdam.

Ticket prices are yet to be confirmed, but Eurostar told C&IT it will "compete with the low cost airlines on price, speed, ease, convenience and the quality of our service."

The news follows the introduction of Eurostar's new e320 trains on the London to Brussels route over the weekend.

Speaking at the e320 launch in Brussels, Marjon Kaper, managing director of Netherlands rail operator NS International, said: "The preparations for the direct connection between Amsterdam and London with Eurostar and NS are progressing well. All partners are working hard on this.

"Today is a very special day for NS and all the partners, because the start of services with the new train to Brussels literally brings the "Amsterdam Route" closer. We see a lot of interest and potential for the high-speed connection between these top destinations – London for visitors from the Netherlands and Amsterdam and Rotterdam as the new hotspots for the British traveller."

Eurostar has invested £1bn in upgrading its fleet, stations and service, including the purchase of 17 new e320 trains and the refurbishment of its original trains.

Designed by Italian design house, Pininfarina, renowned for its iconic car designs, the e320 has been operating on the London-Paris route since November 2015. It boasts 20 per cent more capacity than the original Eurostar trains as well as wifi connectivity and 300 hours of on-board entertainment streamed to customers’ personal devices.
