Houston, Texas won the bid over Vancouver and is set to welcome around 10,000 oil executives from around the world in 2020, having previously hosted the event in 1987. The congress takes place every three years, with this year's being hosted in Istanbul.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said: "A key factor in Houston’s win over Vancouver was a promise to dedicate 100 percent of the net profit from the Houston event to establish a Global Legacy Program that will benefit the next generation of energy industry young professionals."
He added that hosting the congress was a 'tremendous win' for the city and the industry. Houston has bid twice before to host the event.
The World Petroleum Council is the only international organisation that represents all aspects of the petroleum industry. The congress brings together heads of state, energy leaders and technology practitioners to address issues within the oil and gas industry.
