New York beat off strong competition from the likes of Dubai, Singapore and Las Vegas to be crowned Best Mid- to Long-Haul Events Destination at the 2016 C&IT Awards.

Once again, C&IT asked readers to nominate the city, resort or destination that best delivers for events in two categories: Best Short-Haul Destination and Best Mid- to Long-Haul Events Destination.

And, it was the Big Apple that picked up the award on the night, a destination that has welcomed a wave of impressive hotel and venue openings in the last 12 months to complement an envious infrastructure for both conferences and incentives.

"You cannot beat New York as an international destination - variety and character, it wins my vote every time," said one reader, while another complemented the city’s diverse option of hotels and unique venues.

Excitement has been building throughout the year in New York following the unveiling of several key luxury hotels, including the 189-room Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, located in Lower Manhattan, and the 183-room William Vale hotel, a stylish boutique in the centre of the city’s trendy Williamsburg neighbourhood.

The Financial District in Lower Manhattan has also seen major investment and development in the last 18 months, spearheaded by the new One World Trade Centre an the city’s new $4bn train station, the Oculus. Furthermore, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre’s $1bn expansion is set to get underway by the end of the year, adding more than 110,000sqm of additional event space.
