Three of a Kind: media case studies

C&IT's latest Three of a Kind features media company events from Gorkana, Sky Media and ITV.

Sky Media summer conference

Sky Media held its summer conference at Hawker House in Canada Water for 400 employees. The company wanted to hold the event in a trendy venue, with a large capacity. Street Feast venue Hawker House in East London was chosen as an alternative to a traditional conference space. Sky Media took over the entire 3,500-capacity venue. Welcome drinks were held in Hawker House’s outdoor area – a tropical tiki paradise
named the Land of Bamboo, with the conference located in the Big Room, which usually hosts street food traders. The space was transformed with a stage, lighting, screen and theatre- style seating. The evening reception was in Hawker House’s the Other Room, which had different bars and areas to discover.

Guests could visit the Braid Bar before moving onto the VW Campervan photo booth to capture memories from the day.

Gorkana summer staff party

In response to requests from staff, the Gorkana events team organised a summer party to encourage team bonding. In total 240 people attended the event at The Strongroom Bar & Kitchen in Shoreditch, which had a large outdoor space. Drinks flowed throughout the circus-themed event, with cider, beer and wine on offer. In addition to popcorn, candyfloss machines and sumo suits, the company hired Anna the Hulagan to do a walk around with her hula hoop and a fire show. Feedback from staff on the event was extremely positive. "I think a range of beer and cider choices went down really well – as did the relaxed atmosphere of the venue. The barbecue was much appreciated as every person got a meal – whereas with nibbles you can sometimes miss these as they go around," said Hannah Hodges, event manager at Gorkana.

ITV Choice South Africa showcase

ITV Choice South Africa launched in 2015 showing ‘the best of big British entertainment’ on the digital satellite TV Service for Africa: DStv. The debut showcase event, organised by ITV Events and held at The Venue in Johannesburg, aimed to push awareness of the channel and highlight up-and-coming shows such as Victoria, Poldark, Cold Feet and Doc Martin. "We targeted press and clients, aiming for an attendance of 75 on the day. We smashed this target with 110 enthusiastic attendees who jostled to get a front row seat and whooped and cheered to welcome our host Ian Royce to the stage," said Jenni Eley, head of events at ITV. "A 60-minute whistle-stop showcase included an introduction from Katherine Wen, ITV Choice channel director, sneak previews from marketing controller Paul Ridsdale and an interview with actor Martin Clunes. Post-event, guests enjoyed a drinks reception and left armed with an ITV Choice goody bag of British treats.
