London retains top spot on AMEX top ten European cities list

London remains the number one destination for events in Europe, according to the American Express Meetings & Events latest forecast.

The research published in The 2017 Global Meetings and Events Forecast, which is based on the activity of AMEX customers, showed that Barcelona took second spot, while Amsterdam came in third. Last year Paris appeared in second place on the list, but was knocked off by Barcelona, which has risen from eighth place. Despite the terrorist attacks which shook the French capital last year, the city was listed as the fourth most popular European meetings destination.

Last year, Eastern Europe was a popular hotspot, with Riga entering the top ten for the first time. This year, Prague was voted as one of the most popular destinations, with Copenhagen also pushed out in favour of Madrid. Overall, the report showed a rise in popularity in 'second cities'.

The full list of top cities can be found below:

1. London

2. Barcelona

3. Amsterdam

4. Paris

5. Berlin

6. Rome

7. Frankfurt

8. Madrid

9. Brussels

10. Prague

Speaking about the European market, senior vice president and general manager of American Express Meetings & Events, Issa Jouaneh, said: "Europe also has its share of uncertainty, with the influence of Brexit and concerns over acts of terrorism. These events have resulted in a sense of caution across the region. Budgets across Europe are expected to remain flat, with country predictions for 2017 varying, and Germany showing the most optimism, predicting overall meetings budget growth of 3.3%."
