Case Study: Post Office Network Sales Awards live-streaming

The 10th Post Office Network Sales Awards took place at the Novotel London West on 4 June, and was live-streamed by agency Live Union.

Objectives

In addition to a show-stopping awards events, The Post Office wanted to extend the action to people who couldn’t be in attendance but wanted to join in the celebrations. The event needed to use technology to extend the audience capacity from 400 in the room to over 106,616 through social media, with two-way communication streams for real-time interaction.

Solution

The team at Live Union set up Awards TV, which was streamed live on the evening. In addition, the agency made a dedicated communication channel for employees to share their views and cast votes in real time on Twitter, which was visible to people in the room. The agency brought in Really Creative Media’s Hashtag Live social media visualisation solution to facilitate this. The digital world was brought into the room via a series of LED displays forming part of the stage set, so people could see the messages and choose to respond to them from their own accounts. The presenter was given an iPad to control the feed going to his screen that would be shown on camera to take control of the messaging, ensuring that nothing irrelevant was shared. The messages going into the main space were on a separate feed, monitored by the front-of-house team.

Verdict

The live-streamed event proved a huge success, with more than 900 people logging on at home to cast their votes and send messages of support for their nominated colleagues in the room. Nick Dew, managing director of Really Creative Media, said: "This concept is fantastic for award shows and is also an attractive proposition to events with sponsors. As wider industry debates turn to how we add more value and measure ROI for sponsors, this is a way of extending networks, getting instant reactions to activities and capturing data for further communications. We were really excited to be able to use the 4K resolution capability of our Hashtag Live servers on this event and display live data content over the top of video backgrounds."
