For the first time in the C&IT Awards' history, C&IT readers were able to vote for their favourite short-haul destination and it was London that took home the gong.

Readers commented that London is a "fantastic city with so much to do" and that there is always something new to discover. "Classic Grade-listed buildings intermingled with cutting-edge architecture makes London a great city for meetings," said another voter.

Zanine Adams, head of events and business development UK, at London & Partners, said: "We are thrilled that London has been voted as the Best Short-Haul destination by C&IT readers. This great accolade highlights London’s world-leading destination offer and underlines that colleagues from across the UK recognise and value London’s fabulous venues, hotels, restaurants and events companies.

"With London’s rich and diverse supply of unique and spectacular venues, it is the ultimate destination for events that produce lasting results, long-term engagement and business success."

Over the last 12 months, the capital has unveiled a variety of highly anticipated and intriguing venues, including the sky-high event spaces at The Leadenhall Building and 20 Fenchurch Street (aka the ‘Walkie-Talkie’), Shoreditch’s latest boutique property M by Montcalm and the luxurious Mondrian London hotel on South Bank.

Classic London venues such as The Ivy, The Cinnamon Club and The Goring also reopened after extensive refurbishments, confirming the capital’s appetite to continuously promote some of the city’s famous landmark venues to match its latest products.

Exciting developments are scheduled to open in London over the course of the next few years. Set to burst onto the scene before the end of the year is the InterContinental London – The O2 hotel in North Greenwich, which will have one of the city’s largest pillarless ballrooms, while the 168-room Park Plaza London Park Royal and Nobu Shoreditch are on the cards for 2016.

Other shortlisters for the Best Short-haul Destination category included Rotterdam and The Hague, which received a commendation, Barcelona, Dublin, Liverpool and Berlin.
