InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) aims to open the 220-room Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road and the 116-room Staybridge Suites Manchester – Oxford Road at the end of 2016.

The hotels are part of a wider redevelopment of Manchester Business School (MBS) and will adjoin its new two-storey Executive Education Centre, new home for its corporate leadership and management programmes.

Philip Lassman, director of development for the UK & Ireland at IHG, said: "Manchester is a key city for us. Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road will be our third Crowne Plaza hotel in Manchester; and the brand – with its renowned meeting facilities and focus on supporting people who travel for success – is really gaining momentum across the UK."

Professor Fiona Devine, head of MBS, said: "In our 50th anniversary year I am delighted that the development of the hotels and our new Executive Education Centre is progressing so well. Our aim is to provide high-end accommodation that will have wider benefits for visitors to The University of Manchester, the city and region.

The opening of the two properties will take IHG’s portfolio of hotels to 21 in Manchester.

The £1bn development at The University of Manchester is a ten-year plan taking place over two phases, which will see a single campus created for the University, including new student facilities and buildings for teaching and research, as well as 'major improvements to the public realm'.

Significant developments due to be completed at the campus in the next 12 months include the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, the £15m Whitworth Art Gallery, which opened in February and the £61m National Graphene Institute, which will host the National Graphene Week conference in June.
