Winter Qatar 2022 World Cup moves step closer

A FIFA task force has recommended that the Qatar 2022 World Cup should take place in winter, due to summer temperatures in the Middle East.

After a meeting of officials in Doha, FIFA Qatar 2022 taskforce chairman Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa said "the recommendation is towards November/December", a move that is expected to be officially ratified when it is put to FIFA's executive committee next month.

It is also recommended that the World Cup tournament may be "shortened by a few days", due to clashes with domestic leagues around the globe, including the Premier League and other European competitions.

A FIFA statement said the recommendation "has the full support of all 6 confederations".
