The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning (22 November), injuring 14 of the hotel's employees and resulting in 500 guests being evacuated and 80 firefighters attending the scene.

A statement on the hotel's website said: 'We are currently working to determine the extent of the damage at the hotel and to understand the cause of the incident. The hotel is currently closed as those efforts continue. We apologize for the inconvenience to those with upcoming reservations at the hotel.'

'Guests with arrival dates through 31 December 2014 will be contacted by our guest relations team to arrange alternate accommodations.'

A spokesperson for Hyatt London Regency confirmed to C&IT that no events would be taking place until at least 31 December, and that the hotel would be working with clients to make alternative arrangements. A re-opening date will not be confirmed until the ongoing investigation is complete.
