Morgans Hotel Group, curator of London institutions Sandersons and St Martins Lane, selected the iconic Sea Containers House building on the South Bank for its latest venture.
Mondrian London, the first of the boutique brand's properties outside the US, opened on 30 September after a delay that merely whetted the appetite of all who knew it was imminent. A Tom Dixon vision, the interior design reincarnates '1920s cruise ship glamour', the centrepiece being an oversized copper 'hull', which begins outside and runs through the lobby to the riverside.
Six flexible, state-of-the-art events venues take up over 500sqm of space, highlights of which include a nautical-inspired, 56-seat private screening room and Dandelyan, an opulent room with green marble bar and views of the Thames for up to 250 reception guests. There are also seven fully wired, linked junket rooms with terraces and river views available.
A variety of areas to eat, drink, meet and lounge at Mondrian include a riverside restaurant with open kitchen and outdoor seating along the river walk, seasonal cocktail bar and the jewel in the crown, a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the capital.
The Tom Dixon touch also runs through the bedrooms, which are split into eleven categories, from Standard to the River View Apartment, which 'takes luxury to new heights' and is available for private events on request.
To relax, guests can head to Agua Bathhouse & Spa, replete with curving walls and luminous corridors, six treatment suites and steam baths. A 24-hour gym is also on site.
Morgans plans to open Istanbul and Doha Mondrian properties in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
