More than 40 venues across England and Wales will spend the next 12 months preparing to host the giants of rugby union from around the world when they take residence for the World Cup next September.
England will make use of Pennyhill Park, Surrey, their traditional base, as will Wales, who will head to The Vale Resort, Glamorgan in the lead-up to their matches at Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, respectively.
The Lensbury hotel and conference centre in Teddington, teaming up with St Mary's University, will welcome the world's top two teams, New Zealand and South Africa, while Ireland will use St George's Park, the FA's purpose-built centre of excellence near Burton-upon-Trent.
Venues pitching for the business were required to offer an indoor and outdoor training facility, a swimming pool, a gym and a hotel within close proximity.
Meetings facilities were also highly sought-after. Hazelwood, the new state-of-the-art home of London Irish RFC in Middlesex, will host both Wales and Fiji and pitched for the opportunity in April 2013, before the new £12m facility had even been constructed.
Andrew Hogan, communications manager at London Irish RFC, told C&IT: "It's massive to be hosting Wales and Fiji. The realisation that international teams see us as a viable option for an event of this scale is a credit to all the work we've been putting in since April 2013. Wales confirmed after seeing only the plans for the facility."
Hogan confirmed that the teams would use the meeting space at the venue – which can host up to 140 people seated – for sessions including team briefings and international media conferences.
