The investment will help to bring together academics, entrepreneurs, clinicians and business support services, as well as provide funding for a new Centre for Business Incubation, Development and Recovery, all of which will have a positive impact on meetings and conferences across the country.

Alistair Turner, campaign director for the Britain for Events campaign, said: "This shows clearly how government funding of priority economic sectors can have a knock-on benefit for the event business.

"This also came ahead of the amazing opening to the Commonwealth Games last night, which will also demonstrate how major sporting events can act as a focus for business activity to promote trade, inward investment, jobs and exports of Britain's creative talent."

Britain for Events recently launched its first National Events Month in October 2014.
