One Young World picks Bangkok and Ottawa to host future summits

Bangkok and Ottawa have been chosen to host the One Young World Summit in 2015 and 2016, beating Hong Kong and Kobe, Japan in a competitive bid.

Bangkok will host 1,300 delegates from more than 190 countries when the event takes place next year before handing the baton to Ottawa for the 2016 Summit.

The opening ceremony in the Thai capital will include a flotilla procession down the Chao Phraya River with the closing ceremony taking place at the Royal Palace at Sanam Luang, a venue used exclusively by the Royal Family.

The 2016 summit in Ottawa will take place at the Ottawa Convention Centre, with The National Arts Centre hosting the Opening Ceremony and the Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of History hosting the Closing Ceremony.

Kate Roberston, co-founder of One Young World, said: "With every One Young World Summit we hope to push the boundaries of what is possible, to ensure that we continue to be the premier gathering for young leaders globally.

"We were honoured to see the outstanding ambition of the host city proposals from all cities but Bangkok and Ottawa went above and beyond in outlining their plans, which capture the spirit of One Young World.

"We are confident that they will do justice to the hard work that has been put in by previous host cities, who have all had the unique opportunity to share their international, diverse and youth-driven cities with the world."

In April, the charity revealed the bid cities for the 2015 and 2016 summits ahead of this year's event, which takes place in Dublin in October. The Irish capital beat off stiff competition from Hong Kong and Edinburgh to secure the event.

Previous One Young World summits have taken place in London, Zurich, Pittsburgh and Johannesburg with the 2015 summit being the first to be hosted in Asia.
