Oman strengthens convention and exhibition centre team ahead of 2016 opening

The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has made a number of senior appointments as it prepares for its opening in two years' time.

Gillian Taylor, who worked for the Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau and Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority for the past eight years, joins as director of business development. Previously, she served as a board member of the Society of International Travel Executives and Australia’s Sydney Convention and Visitors Bureau. Prior to working in Abu Dhabi, she was general manager for a destination management company in Sydney for more than 10 years.

John Burke joins as director of operations, bringing extensive operational experience to the venue having served most recently at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha and prior to that, over 15 years with the UK's NEC Group which included the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Birmingham, International Convention Centre (ICC) Birmingham, LG Arena and National Indoor Arena (NIA).

"The combination of both Gill and John's knowledge and experience will lay a sound platform to position the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre as the first venue of choice for international and regional conventions and exhibitions in the Arabian Gulf," said Trevor McCartney, OCEC general manager.

Other appointments include Salim Al Flaiti as director of human resources, Ahmed Al Habsi as director of finance & administration and Akram Al Maawali as protocol and liaison manager.

Further recruitment drives are planned over the next 12 months in the areas of operations, event planning, production, venue presentation and food and beverage.
