Smith joins from a London-based investment company after spending five years as a stockbroker.
In his new role, Smith will contribute to the strategic growth of Bluehat, overseeing all sales and marketing functions.
Commercial director Ben Parkinson said: "Along with his enthusiasm and can-do attitude, Richard brings new ideas and a range of skills from a different industry, which we feel will transfer well to our sector.
