Hargreaves' move follows the departure of the Barbican's general manager Anthony Hyde and its head of sales and business events Samme Allen in the last six months.

In his new role, Hargreaves will oversee the delivery of events in the corporate, agency and association sectors, with a particular focus on continuing the Barbican's trend for bringing together commercial business and the arts.

Jackie Boughton, the Barbican's head of sales, said: "Since Oliver joined the Barbican three years ago, he has had a significant impact of the development of client relationships and subsequent new business.

"He continually looks for new routes to market, opportunities and sectors to exploit and our hosting of Wikimania in September this year – one of the Barbican's highest profile events in 2014 – is testament to his ambition and talent.

"This promotion is well deserved and I look forward to working more closely with him as he grows into this new role."

Hargreaves added: "The Barbican's focus on events that seamlessly blur the lines between the commercial and cultural worlds makes it a fascinating and exciting place to work. Knowing that instead of selling space, I am selling a concept and ensuring the success of client events is really rewarding."
