Sharkey, who left his role as chief executive officer of the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre (SECC) in April, is to work as a consultant for venues in the meetings, exhibitions and entertainment space.

Sharkey told C&IT: "I worked on the SSE Hydro project from the early planning stages, through to funding and procurement to construction to opening the venue and to establishing a business plan. I plan to use this skill set to apply to both existing and potential venues in the early project stages to take these businesses to the next level.

"I plan to grow the business as we take on new projects. I do not plan to be a one-man band. I am currently in conversations with 12 clients and I'm really excited about the next stage of my career."

Sharkey has been replaced at the SECC by former commercial director, Peter Duthie.
