Hulton received the award from JMIC president, Philippe Fournier, stating: "Our objectives in JMIC have always been to grow the beneficial interactions among member organisations and to reach out to the broader business and governmental communities with whom we must interact.

"Tom’s extensive roles in both these areas over many years make him a perfect candidate for the Unity Award and we are pleased to be giving it to him at a point where the results of his work are becoming more evident by the day."

Hulton was appointed director of international relations with Imex, having previously been CEO of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

Other winners on the night included Edgar Hirt, managing director of Congress Centre Hamburg and president of the International Association of Convention Centres (IACC), who won the Academy Award for Europe.

Fay Beauchine, former president of Business Loyalty at Aimia, received the Academy Award for the Americas, while the Academy Award for the Asia Pacific Region was won by Trevor McCartney, general manager of Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre.
