TEDx event organisers urge planners to 'dream big'

TEDx event planners shared insights into the global phenomenon of their conferences with delegates at EMEC 2014.

Speaking at MPI’s annual conference in Istanbul, Lars Sudmann, a TEDx speaker and coach, explained the magic behind TED and TEDx conferences and how they have become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 500 million viewers.

Sudmman said: "Dream big. Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. Reveal something never seen before. Do something the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world."

Sudmann was joined by Ali Ustundag of Iltek Media, who has organised four TEDx events in Istanbul. He said: "The quality of speakers and the level of inspiration they provide is key to the success of an event. Content is the single most important aspect. Our speakers don’t teach, or preach, but inspire. That’s our motto."

Sudmann also revealed that the most watched three-minute TED Talks have five moments of humour - an average of 1.6 laughs per minute, demonstrating the importance of humour at a conference.

He added: "Humour makes concepts easier to understand and digest. Speakers must also demonstrate a strong authority on a topic and distill presentations into three key messages. Heavy data can be made engaging too – be creative."
