Sustainability is key to innovation and gaining competitive advantage, according to Sahar Hashemi, entrepreneur and co-founder of Coffee Republic, who spoke at the Sustainable Events Summit.

Talking to more than 120 events and sustainability managers, venues and agencies at the Sustainable Events Summit 2014, Hashemi said: "Back in 1990s, sustainability wasn't an issue. In 2000, companies started almost paying lip service to sustainability and it was a box-ticking exercise to have a green credential. What's different now sustainability isn't about having green credential. It's new way of doing business.

"Sustainability is inextricably linked to innovation, so it makes huge business sense. Sustainability provides a news lens to provide a competitive advantage. It’s about tweaking processes to drive innovation and greater efficiencies."

Is the events industry doing enough?

"In the events industry, it hasn’t been an easy ride over the last five years, so having that extra issue of sustainability has been tough. However, businesses and event planners need to refocus sustainability as an opportunity for growth. It is a new channel to be more creative and to distinguish yourselves."
