Harrogate International Centre (HIC), which is better known for large-scale conferences and exhibitions, will launch itself into the region’s smaller events market this year.

Local hotels have traditionally dominated the sector but the venue's director, Simon Kent, says he is determined to break into the new market.

"This is going to be a tough market to break into because our region has a large number of good hotels and they are usually the first choice when businesses want to host things such as seminars or corporate hospitality.

"To open this new market our strategy is not only about competitive pricing of our smaller rooms and halls but also selling our expertise."
