Barnett, who is senior exhibition director at Reed, said: "Around 60% of buyers are actively seeking appointments via the online diary, taking the average appointments made per buyer from 13 last year to 14.5. This shows that EIBTM is a serious business event and perhaps confidence, as well as budgets, are increasing."

Some 40% of visitors this year are first-time attendees and there are 35 new exhibitors. More than 150 countries are represented at the trade show, including visitors from Cuba, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic.

In June, Reed launched IBTM Africa to rival Meetings Africa. IBTM will take place at the Cape Town International Conference Centre on 28-30 April 2014, as part of Africa Travel Week.
