Dubbed MediCity, its official launch takes place on Thursday (21 November). The office and laboratory complex is primarily for hire by medical start-ups to base their firms, but the venue will eventually offer event organisers a venue for health-focused conferences for up to 1,000 delegates.

The 7,000sqm space is housed in the historical Boots-owned art-deco D6 building in Beeston, Nottingham, the home of Boots. The Grade I building was originally designed in the 1930s by engineer Sir Owen Williams for the manufacture, storage of medical powders, tablets and lozenges.

It has since been refurbished to provide office and laboratory space designed for hire by entrepreneurial businesses in the consumer healthcare, medical technology, diagnostics and beauty product markets.

MediCity, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, is hosting a number of events this week (18-22 November) and is expecting more than 300 guests form the health, beauty and wellness sectors.

Ken Murphy, Alliance Boots' managing director of health and beauty, international and brands, said: "Boots has a long history of innovation in Nottingham and, together with BioCity, we are excited by the opportunity to work with like-minded businesses and individuals in assisting the future development of the health, beauty and wellness market in the UK and beyond."

BioCity was founded in September 2003 by the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and the East Midlands Development Agency.
