Business50 holds Glasgow conference

Business50 held a conference for 1,200 delegates earlier this year at Hampden Park, Glasgow.

Pre-event planning: Business50, which offers business support through training and promotional opportunities, holds a series of conferences across the UK aimed at small-business owners. For its Glasgow event, held on the 30 April, the company devised email and social media campaigns in the run-up to the conference.

"We started slowly then ramped it up, with daily updates in the two weeks leading up to the day itself," says Jane Torley, director of Business50.

Challenges: Torley says that flexibility was always going to be the key issue, in terms of logistic arrangements for the venue and the event staff. An unforeseen and very sharp increase in the number of delegates expected took place in the two weeks before the event, meaning that the original space at Hampden Park was suddenly looking inadequate.

Solution: Business50 and Sodexo Prestige, which provided the catering on the day, reconfigured the conference space, spreading it out over two areas rather than one. "This enabled us to welcome 50 per cent more delegates then we had originally catered for," says Torley. Delegates were given a timetable for the day, with the opportunity to explore Hampden Park in their free time. Executive suites at the venue were also booked for smaller breakout meetings and a networking lunch.

Client verdict: "Hampden provided everything we needed for this key event," says Torley. She adds that the event met objectives perfectly, and she was particularly impressed with the smooth handling of the change to the original delegate numbers in the run-up to the day.

"Informal feedback from the delegates shows that they were delighted with the event," says Torley. "As a testament to its success, we have already booked the venue for another event, taking place this month."
