The new facilities, which have been granted planning permission, will cater for delegates visiting the trust’s Genome Campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge.

The project, known as the Kitchen Garden Enclosure, draws inspiration from the glass ceiling at the British Museum in London. The conference centre’s current cloisters and grassed areas surrounding the auditorium will be opened up and enclosed under a glass roof to create a mulit-use space.

Work is due to start in January and be completed by December 2014.

Linda Prior, sales and marketing manager at the centre, said: "Not only will this place us at the forefront of the scientific conferences sector, but will also better integrate us into the wider vision of the Genome Campus."

In total, the conference centre will have undergone a £19m renovation to modernise and improve its facilities by January 2015. It has already increased its restaurant capacity from 180 to 300 this year and is weeks away from opening a new suite of 64 bedrooms.
