The rise of events management degrees in universities is positive for our industry’s professional recognition but vital to the success and effectiveness of these courses is the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience in the field.
The industry needs to dedicate more resources to supporting apprenticeships and graduate schemes. If we don’t support universities through apprenticeships, internships and graduate placements, we limit our talent pool and ultimately weaken our future prospects.
It is fundamental that we dedicate our resources to supporting apprenticeships and graduate schemes, whether they are government backed or developed internally. 2012 was a stellar year for events and I’m sure the halo effect of seeing so many successful projects delivered has inspired a fair few to look at events as a career path.
Now is the time to capitalise on this by providing our unreserved support to this latest generation of events practitioners rather than falling into the old catch 22 of demanding experience in our candidates but not being willing to provide it to those with potential.
