Business events boost Canberra's tourism sector

The Canberra Convention Bureau has achieved its 2012-13 target of generating AUS$41.6million in confirmed business, delivering 66,400 nights of accommodation room occupancy to the Canberra economy.

This represents a five per cent increase in overnight stays generated by the Bureau, compared to the previous year, with the business events sector continuing to perform well.

According to Tourism Research Australia's (TRA) visitor night research, business tourism overnight stays accounted for 36 per cent of all stays for the year ending March 2013, representing 2.2million room nights. This is a growth of 70 per cent since 2008, when business tourism accounted for 24 per cent of all overnight stays, or 1.3million room nights.

"It is likely that the growth in business tourism room nights reported by TRA from March 2008 to March 2013 issignificantly contributed to by the business eventssector," said RobynHendry, Chief Executive ofthe CanberraConvention Bureau, "asthe Bureau has also seen similar growth in roomnights directly attracted by the Bureauincrease by 36 per centsince 2008 from48,700 to 66,400 nights."
