Plans for a new championship golf course with luxury resort hotel and conference facilities at Hoylake in Wirral, Liverpool, have been moved to the next level, Wirral Council has revealed.
"We aim to make an announcement at next year’s Open," said Kevin Adderley, council strategic director for regeneration and environment at Wirral Council.
"So far 20 developers have shown an interest – they include specialists in golf and hotels or a partnership of both. "These expressions of interest have come from across the world. Many are universally-known names – especially in golfing circles."
The 285-acre site will include a "signature golf course with private clubhouse and a five-star hotel with restaurant, health and leisure, conference and deluxe spa facilities. The development of a first-class golf resort will offer international class sports and hospitality facilities and the opportunity to regularly attract a variety of major golf competitions."
Meanwhile, Scotland will look to maximise its golf incentive offer as the Open Championship heads to Muirfield, East Lothian next month. The sport's signature tournament will take place on 18-21 July.
