What does your new role entail?

In my first year, my priorities will be to build a strong and dedicated team to deliver excellence in all IOC events.

I will oversee a large team for all non-sporting events, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games. My first event will be the IOC's executive board meeting and AGM in Buenos Aires in September 2013, where the host nation of the 2020 Olympic Games will be selected. My first major event will be the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in February 2014.

Where have you come from?

I joined Uefa in June 2011 as the head of the its travel and conferences unit after more than 11 years as head of Sibos and events at the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (Swift). At Uefa, I was in charge of around 15 people and worked on more than 1,000 events a year.

What do you enjoy about events?

I enjoy the troubleshooting element that is inevitable when you are organising big events.

At the very beginning of my time at Swift, in 2001, we had to cancel an event in Singapore just two weeks before the opening, because of the commencement of air strikes in Afghanistan and the subsequent restrictions on air travel. Unwinding a huge event like that was the best schooling I could have had.

What would be your ultimate event to work on?

Working for the IOC is my dream job. As a Greek from the small island of Corfu, I feel honoured to be serving the Olympic ideal.

What are the key event trends at the moment?

Hybrid events are the next stop. Technology has changed the way we do business. In such a constantly changing environment, events industry professionals should focus on one main thing – bringing together the physical with the virtual. Create the 'hybrid' event that attracts a broad audience.
