Industry reacts to intern dissatisifaction research

The event industry has taken to Twitter following research, published in C&IT, suggesting that a quarter of interns abandon the sector after a year.

The responses were prompted by C&IT's Workplace Uncovered series analysis, which featured research by George Lancaster, a student at Leeds Met University.

The report revealed that almost 80% of first-year event management students saw themselves working in the industry after graduation, but this figure dropped to just over half (53%) for students after a year-long internship.

C&IT subsequently received a series of tweets defending internships, with companies directors joining current and ex-interns in praising their treatment and experience.

C&IT spoke to intern Ella Tacey, event co-ordinator at Assured Events, who said she has had a wholly positive experience at the company.

"I've been able to get involved in lots of aspects of the events industry from the idea creation to the budget. There's been a structure to my internship. The hours, which can sometimes be long, were something I had anticipated long before joining Assured," she added.
