'Games volunteers' trialled for events

An Olympic Games-style volunteer scheme will be trialled in London for three association congresses this year, with a view to providing the service permanently for large events.

Groups of volunteers will be located at key locations in the capital, including airports and major Tube and train stations, to welcome congress participants and provide information.

London and Partners will look to run trials for the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation in April, the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers in June and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in July, which together will attract around 20,000 delegates.

Becky Graveney, head of associations at London and Partners, said: "We are working with the Greater London Authority on three test events this year to trial a watered-down version of the volunteer scheme, which will depend on the venue, the numbers expected and what the association's PCO is already organising. The scheme will give associations the added (benefit of knowing) that their congress will have a presence in the city."
