The display, which took place over the River Thames and the EDF Energy London Eye, was seen by millions of people on BBC One and live by hundreds of thousands more lining the banks of the River Thames.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:  "What an amazing end to an incredible year. Watched by hundreds of thousands in the capital and millions around the globe London has proved, yet again, that it can pull off spectacular world-class events in style."

The music soundtrack was curated by Jack Morton's creative director David Zolkwer and produced in collaboration with Nik Goodman and Dan McGrath at Bounce.

The eclectic soundtrack included ‘soundbite’ quotes from The Queen and key personalities of 2012 including Sebastian Coe, Boris Johnson and David Cameron.

DJ Nihal once again mixed live in the build-up to midnight.

Jim Donald, executive producer, Jack Morton Worldwide said: "It has been our great honour to work with a very talented team to create this iconic and spectacular event for the past nine years. This year is particularly special in that we have been able to both open and close what has been a truly extraordinary year for London and the United Kingdom."
