Hotel boom for Zurich region

Zurich and the greater Zurich region will provide more than 1,600 new hotel rooms by 2015 in Switzerland, an increase of 12% compared to 2011.

This is according to a Switzerland Meetings Report released last month, which also revealed that the congress tourism segment generated approximately 19% of all hotel overnight stays in 2011 in the country.
Smaller events (those with ten or more participants), were included in the analysis for the first time.

In 2011 the frequency of conferences, incentives and meetings was highest in the months of March and May (each with a share of 13% of the total number of events), followed by June (11%), and November (9%). Over 70% of the events took place during the low season of leisure tourism.

Future developments in Zurich include two hotels and a 1,500-seat convention centre comprising an area of 200,000-metre square. The developments, which are close to the airport, are expected to be completed by 2017.
