Department heads have been told that they can exercise their own "discretion and common sense" on meetings.

Some of the 12 staff cut from AstraZeneca’s event team are leaving this month following staff cuts made company wide earlier this year, as part of a restructure in February.

An AstraZeneca spokeswoman said that the company has a firm commitment to attending congresses and essential medical conferences.

She added: "There was a steady implementation of February’s restructure throughout the year, part of which saw our in-house event team being cut from 14 to two. Much of this was to make full use of video conferencing and virtual meetings facilities which had been in place for some time. Where necessary, event co-ordination was and is outsourced."

No additional staff cuts have been made at AstraZeneca since its Q3 announcement last Thursday (25 October).
